Three visas, three countries, three very different outcomes. We applied for all three to give you the honest, time-stamped comparison no travel blog has done before.
I spent 14 months applying for, living on, and stress-testing three of the world's most-discussed digital nomad visas. Here's what nobody tells you until after you've submitted your paperwork.
Portugal - D8 Digital Nomad Visa
The D8 requires proof of remote income above €3,480/month. Processing time: 3–4 months at a consulate. The NHR tax regime offers 20% flat tax on foreign income for 10 years - this is the real prize.
D8 Requirements at a Glance
- Proof of remote income ≥ €3,480/month (payslips, contracts, bank statements)
- Clean criminal record certificate (apostilled)
- Proof of accommodation in Portugal
- Private health insurance covering Portugal
- Consulate appointment and visa fee (~€90)
The NHR regime is the hidden gem of Portugal's nomad offer. 20% flat rate on qualifying income for a full decade - no other EU country comes close for high earners.
Georgia - Remotely from Georgia
No minimum income. No official application. Georgia simply lets visitors from 98 qualifying countries enter visa-free for 365 days. Banking can be tricky without a local employer letter.
Georgia at a Glance

- Application process: None - visa on arrival or e-visa

Mexico - Temporary Resident Visa
The Mexican Temporary Resident Visa requires proof of income (~$1,620/month) or savings (~$27,000). A 1-year visa renewable to 4 years, after which permanent residency is automatic.
Head-to-Head Verdict
- Most flexible: Georgia
- Easiest legal pathway: Mexico
- Best long-term financial upside: Portugal

Pick Georgia if you want to test the lifestyle first. Pick Mexico if you're staying 2+ years. Pick Portugal if you're optimising for the next decade.
